2008 MINUTEMAN BASEBALL LEAGUE 2008 marks the 13th season of the Minuteman Baseball League, a recreational baseball league for players of ages 13 through 15. The league began in 1996 with teams from Maynard, Sudbury, and Wayland, and then expanded to include Westford in 1998, Concord-Carlisle in 1999, Weston in 2001, Acton-Boxborough in 2005, Littleton in 2006, Wellesley in 2007 and Bolton in 2008. As a result of our continued expansion, the Minuteman Baseball League includes more than 60 teams this spring, providing an exciting baseball program for over 750 young ballplayers in our area. That's a huge increase over time, as we have progressed from 12 teams with 160 players in our first year (1996) to 62 teams and 830 players in 2007. Clearly we are meeting our primary objective of keeping young teens enthusiastic about baseball as they master the transition from the smaller Little League diamond to the Major League-sized diamond. The variety and excitement of competing against teams from other towns has been an important ingredient in our success, but an additional byproduct has been the development of exciting in-town rivalries, as players and parents anticipate the opportunity to compete against friends and neighbors. The spring season of 2008 will be comprised of 2 separate leagues. The first division is the Patriot League which is for 13-year old players only as defined in our rules. The second division is the Minuteman League which is for 13 to 15-year old players as defined in our rules. During 2008, the Minuteman League will play 3 rounds of regular season play on weekends. An attempt will be made to schedule games against teams of comparable ability throughout the regular season. Teams in the Patriot League will play against each other during the week with a separate single elimination playoff among all teams at the end of the season. All teams are eligible to participate in a round of post-season playoffs. This summer we expect to sponsor the fifth season of the Minuteman Baseball Summer League. This summer program, which included 11 teams in 2007, provides a summer recreational baseball opportunity for the 13 to 16 year-old players who are not selected for their towns’ competitive travel teams. Games will likely begin soon after July 4, with each team playing twice per week on weeknights. A two-round, ten-game reshuffle format will be used, followed by a week of playoffs. Our spring league rules apply, with a few modifications. For all of these activities, we continue to benefit from our professionally administered website (www.mmbrl.com) for the collection and communication of up-to-date league information, including schedules, scores, pitchers, and standings. We hope you'll enjoy your participation in the Minuteman League. If you have any comments or suggestions, please share them with your town's director so that we can continue to improve. Also, please take the time to thank the many volunteers whose efforts have made this program possible.
